Gabrielys Encarnacion Lopez

Rotation Student

Gabrielys is a first-year PhD student in the Biomedical Sciences program doing a rotation in the Jimenez Sainz Lab. She was born and raised in Puerto Rico, where she pursued her B.S. in Cellular and Molecular Biology and a minor in Medical Humanities in the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras. As an undergraduate student, she did research on the optimization of cytochrome c-loaded nanoparticles for cancer treatment. Recently, as a PREP student at Case Western Reserve University, she investigated the effect of posttranslational modifications on Alzheimer’s Disease-related proteins using biophysical and biochemical methods. Her current interests lie on studying protein structure and function as drivers of disease, specially in cancer and neurodegeneration.

 

Outside of school, Gabrielys enjoys spending time with her friends and family, getting to know Charleston, traveling and reading.
